What a year it has been for The Orkney Distillery so far!

It has been one of the busiest seasons here The Orkney Distillery, welcoming thousands of new and returning customers to our Visitor Centre here in Kirkwall. With Autumn fast approaching, let’s take a look back at some highlights from our busy summer season…

Fara Launch

Since opening our doors to the public in 2018, whisky production has been a long-held ambition for The Orkney Distillery. As an initial step into the whisky market, and before our Single Malt Whisky becomes available after the minimum three-year maturation period, we launched our first Blended Malt Scotch Whisky in May of this year - Fara. Matured in selected casks in Kirkwall, Fara is elegantly smooth, with sweet notes of heather honey and vanilla, complimented by hints of spiced apple.

We are incredibly grateful to all of our customers over the years for your continued support and custom, and for helping our journey into the world of craft spirit be what it is today!

Travellers’ Choice 2024 Award

In July this year, The Orkney Distillery & Visitor Centre earned Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Award. This award is given to businesses that consistently deliver amazing experiences and, thanks to your positive reviews and feedback from your visits to our distillery, we made the list once again this year!

With this award, we hope to welcome lots more visitors, as well as returning customers, to our distillery next season.

Arrival of Portuguese Hoga Still set

In August of this year, we received the last of our Portuguese Hoga Copper Still set. Once installed, these 1000 litre stills will be used exclusively for the distillation of our whisky and rum. These stills, paired with our new brewhouse which is expected to arrive in the coming months, will provide production capacity of around 30,000 litres of pure alcohol per year.

Cask arrival

Last week, we received virgin oak casks which will soon be filled with our whisky for a minimum three-year maturation period.

To make our casks more traditional, affordable and manageable, they’ll be smaller than the modern standard barrels. This allows for balanced maturation and means a shorter wait for a dram of your Orkney Single Malt. Members of the team have done this before, so we know that it works, and works well!
Although cask releases will be occasional, the constant element throughout will be our aim to fill each with 59% ABV spirit, reflecting the Orkney Distillery’s place in the world at a latitude of 58.98 degrees north.
